High School Students Take on Colorado Water Laws

Denver, Colorado, USA

Project Summary

A team of students at GVR High School is researching Colorado’s water laws to propose new policies and reforms that address modern water challenges. Their work, in partnership with Denver Water, aims to shape legislation that ensures sustainable water use for the future.

Detailed Story

Water is essential for life, but laws governing its use can be complex. A group of four students from Green Valley Ranch High School — Janice Amoah, Uche O, Amari Heru, and Alexis Botchey — have taken on the challenge of studying Colorado’s water laws to propose new policies or suggest amendments to improve water sustainability. This project was inspired by a December 11, 2024, workshop with Denver Water, where students learned about water rights, population impact, and conservation strategies. Recognizing gaps in existing policies, the team set out to: – Analyze current water laws and how they affect Denver’s residents – Identify areas for legal improvements in water management and conservation – Develop and propose policy recommendations to government officials and organizations Through extensive research and interviews with water experts, the students hope to advocate for fair and effective water regulations that address climate change, population growth, and water shortages. Their final proposals will be completed by May 1, 2025.
