Campus Birdhouse Project to Increase Biodiversity and Support Local Ecosystem
Project Summary
A junior at Gloucester High School completed an independent project to increase bird diversity on the school campus by building and installing five birdhouses. The project was inspired by TCI’s canopy tree cover tool and biodiversity resources through the TownGreen Youth Climate Leadership Program. After studying canopy coverage maps and identifying the school’s location in an area with low tree coverage, the student collaborated with the school’s carpentry program to construct and install birdhouses throughout the wooded areas of campus.
Detailed Story
Through participation in TownGreen’s Youth Climate Leadership Program with The Climate Initiative (TCI), a Gloucester High School student was inspired to address local biodiversity challenges on her school campus. The project began when the student was captivated by TCI’s canopy tree cover tool during a program segment on resources and solutions to increase biodiversity. After studying maps that displayed canopy coverage, she realized that while Gloucester is blessed with many wooded areas, the high school is located in an area with the lowest canopy coverage, which prompted her concern for bird diversity and the surrounding ecosystem. The student conducted thorough research, developed a budget plan, and secured permission from both school administration and the Department of Public Works before beginning implementation. She leveraged community resources by partnering with the high school’s carpentry program, whose teacher and students provided materials and labor to construct the birdhouses. This collaboration resulted in five professionally-built birdhouses being installed throughout the school grounds during the final week of the school year. The student emphasized the importance of using community resources to foster change and growth, noting how she asked for help from other students and received enthusiastic support from the administration. The project demonstrates how individual student initiative can create meaningful environmental impact through strategic partnerships and community engagement. As the student reflected: “I feel it is extremely important to use community resources and with those resources foster change and growth in your community, however big or small it may be. In my case, I asked for help from other students and received support from the administration.” She expressed deep gratitude to her Youth Advisory Council Advisor, Maureen Aylward at TownGreen, Ariel Maldonado at TCI, and the GHS carpentry teacher and students who donated materials and time to help bring her vision to life with enthusiasm.
Impact Statement
The project successfully installed five birdhouses on school grounds to provide additional nesting sites for local bird species in an area identified as having low canopy coverage. The student developed leadership and project management skills while demonstrating how community collaboration can amplify individual environmental initiatives. The project created lasting habitat infrastructure that will continue to support bird diversity for years to come, while also inspiring potential future environmental projects among the school community.
