Wave of Change: Life-Sized Plastic Bottle Sculpture

Deerfield Beach, Florida, USA

Project Summary

Students collected used plastic bottles from cleanups to construct a life-sized wave sculpture, creating an immersive educational installation that raises awareness about single-use plastic pollution while demonstrating creative upcycling of waste materials

Detailed Story

Students from Surf Skate Science participated in community cleanups to collect discarded plastic bottles, which they repurposed to create an impressive life-sized wave sculpture. The structure is designed so people can enter the wave, creating an immersive educational experience. Inside the installation, visitors are surrounded by thousands of plastic bottles – a powerful visual representation of plastic waste. The project highlights that Americans purchase approximately 50 billion water bottles annually, averaging 13 bottles per person each month. The students’ goal was to create a memorable, interactive art piece that would help people visualize the scale of plastic waste while promoting sustainable alternatives like reusable water bottles, which could save an average of 156 plastic bottles per person annually.

Impact Statement

Created a powerful educational installation that allows visitors to physically experience the scale of plastic waste while learning about single-use plastic consumption in the United States. The project combines environmental cleanup, waste upcycling, artistic expression, and public education about sustainability.
